Psychotherapy and Counselling
What is Counselling?
Counselling enables people to explore difficulties that may be preventing them from moving forwards in their lives. Whether the concerns be in the present or something that relates to the past.
Counselling can be offered either on a short term six or twelve session basis, or open ended which will continues until you feel ready to stop.
Counselling offers a safe and non-judgemental environment to help explore concerns that may appear to be difficult or overwhelming.
The aim is to enable you to develop self awareness and insight into how you relate yo yourself and the outside world. Gaining self awareness through reflection and exploration with your counsellor can help bring about growth and change.
Reasons people seek counselling or psychotherapy may include:
- Childhood trauma
- Depression
- Stress and Anxiety
- Abuse
- Eating Disorders
- Relationship Difficulties
- Bereavement and Loss
- Low Self Esteem
- Lack of Confidence
- Anger
What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy provides an opportunity to think about yourself and the feelings that arise as you relate to others.
The therapist helps you to look at the unconscious processes which lie behind so much of your behaviour, and which can make life seem at times so confusing. With better understanding comes the possibility of making helpful and sustainable changes in your life.
The relationship with your therapist which underlies this, develops gradually over month and sometimes years.
The number of sessions each week, usually between one and three, will be agreed with your therapist.
Assessments
The initial appointment will last for 1.5 hours. You will be encouraged to talk about difficulties which are leading you to seek either counselling or psychotherapy now. The therapist will help you explore your needs and whether psychotherapy or counselling is the most appropriate.
